NOTE FROM THE 2010 LCCPW PRESIDENT
Its an honor to be elected President of such a great organization as La Costa Canyon Pop Warner. I have big shoes to fill (figuratively speaking) following the excellent leadership provided by Fran Sesti. A huge thanks to Fran for her hard work - very few will ever know how important her constant attention to LCCPW was in making 2008 and 2009 successful years.
I also want to thank all the 2009 Board of Director volunteers for their hard work and dedication. For those moving on, you will be missed. For those returning, welcome back!
Pop Warner Football is practically a year-round activity, especially for board members and coaches, not to mention our year-round cheer squads. However, every returning and prospective new member should be aware of the upcoming key dates and timeframes for the 2010 season Exact dates TBD:
- Registration begins in early March, with three (3) in-person dates
- Player evaluation for JPW, PW, JM, Midget players in mid-April
- Teams announced at Family Night in early June
- Equipment pickup in late June/early July
- Season begins Mon., August 2
- Season ends mid-November
Competitively, 2009 was a great success overall for LCCPW, with several standout team performances. We had two cheer squads - Golden Mavericks Jr. Pee Wee and Midget Mavericks - place 4th at Pop Warner Nationals. Our D2 Wild Mavericks Jr. Pee Wee team won the Palomar Championship. Six of our ten competitive-division teams advanced to Palomar playoffs, all of our cheer squads placed well at Palomar, and we had winning seasons for several Mitey Mite, Jr. Mitey Mite and Flag teams.
Overall, LCCPW continues to serve its membership well. In our annual survey results, 88% said they were either very satisfied or satisfied with LCCPW this season. Only six percent expressed any dissatisfaction. While this is good, I hope we can make it even better in 2010.
The upcoming year will likely be as financially challenging as 2009. The huge rental increases instituted by local schools in 2009 for field practice space remain, and the increase in financial-need scholarship requests we experienced in 2009 will likely be there in 2010 too. LCCPW must continue its strong sponsorship and fundraising efforts to keep overall registration costs down. We have not raised fees in the past 3 years and we are hoping that we can continue that trend this year. We were able to tap some reserves left from 2008, allowing the organization to break even on costs, but we still have large commitments in 2010 and beyond. I'm confident we can achieve our fundraising goals in 2010, allowing us to keep our registration costs down. I look forward to working with everyone to do that.
Again, I want to thank all of the 2010 Board for volunteering their time toward this worthy organization. As a 100% volunteer-driven group, it is the dedications of these volunteers who enable us to create this wonderful and unique experience for our children.
I hope I get the opportunity to meet each member in 2010 and look forward to serving as your president. Thanks, and Go Mavericks!
Sincerely,
Chris Wildermuth

ANNUAL FUN RUN A SUCCESS!!
The Annual Fun Run Fundraiser brought in more than $30,000 this year from all teams and participants - an excellent response by generous parents and friends at a time when enrollment is off 20% and challenging economic times. That money will be used to offset the huge increase in field costs. Remember, the organization is run by volunteers donating enormous amounts of time and sometimes money to keep LCCPW going. Nobody in LCCPW receives any money in compensation. Thank you to everyone for donating money, time and energy to sustaining LCCPW's reputation for excellence.

SWINE FLU INFORMATION
What to do about the Swine Flu
By Dr. William Hitchcock, MD FAAP
La Costa Pediatrics/La Jolla Pediatrics
There has been recent concern about potential exposure to "Swine Flu" involving some of the league's cheerleaders. Swine Flu is a new strain of the influenza virus that appeared this past spring. In the majority of cases it has not caused infections that were more serious than "seasonal influenza."
The symptoms of influenza usually involve a combination of the following: high fever, sore throat, cough, headaches, fatigue and body aches. Influenza infections are highly contagious and players/cheerleaders with these symptoms should stay home and avoid contact with others. Coaches need to understand the importance of not having other teammates exposed to a sick player/cheerleader.
The treatment for flu is rest, fluids and fever/pain control. Antiviral medications, such as Tamiflu and Relenza are used in very sick individuals. These medications are also used to prevent exposed people from getting the flu. If a person develops flu symptoms, these medicines can be used within the first 48 hours to reduce the severity of symptoms.
The incubation period is approximately four to seven days, so if someone was exposed more than a week ago and has no symptoms, they are unlikely to get the flu. Players/Cheerleaders may return to practice once they have had no fever for 24-hours.
The most effective prevention of influenza is vaccination. The "seasonal flu" vaccine is currently available in some medical offices and is available as a shot or nasal spray. The CDC expects "Swine Flu" vaccines to be available by September or October. Distribution may end up being handled by the Public Health Department. Both vaccines are recommended for children from 6 months to 18 years of age.
